There’s something quietly rewarding about making a pour over. The ritual. The aroma. The first sip of a perfectly balanced cup. The Hario V60 is a favorite among coffee professionals and home brewers alike because it offers total control over your brew — from grind size to pour speed.
If you’ve ever wondered how to make café-quality coffee at home, this guide will walk you through our go-to recipe for the Hario V60. Whether you’re using freshly roasted Cutters Point beans or your current favorite, you’ll learn the fundamentals of timing, water temperature, and technique for a consistently delicious cup.
Let’s get brewing.
To get the best out of your Hario V60, a little precision goes a long way. Having the right tools and knowing your ratios will help you hit that sweet spot — balanced, bright, and full-bodied.
Brew Overview
Recommended Ratio
We use a 1:15 coffee-to-water ratio for a clean, balanced flavor.
If you’d like a slightly bolder cup, you can adjust closer to 1:14 — but the 1:15 ratio hits the sweet spot for most medium and light roasts.
Once your gear is ready and your beans are ground, it’s time to brew. The key to a great V60 is even saturation and a steady pour — it’s what brings out the coffee’s natural sweetness and complexity.

1. Prepare the Filter and Brewer
Fold the paper filter along the seam and place it inside your V60 dripper. Rinse the filter thoroughly with hot water to remove any papery taste and to preheat your dripper and mug. Discard the rinse water.

2. Add Coffee and Tare the Scale
Grind 20g of coffee to a medium-fine consistency (about the texture of table salt). Add it to the rinsed filter and gently shake to level the bed. Set your V60 and cup on a scale and zero it out.

3. The Bloom (0:00–0:30)
Start your timer and pour 40g of water — about twice the weight of the coffee. Make sure all the grounds are evenly saturated. This step allows trapped gases to escape, helping your brew extract evenly. Let it bloom for 30–45 seconds.

4. Main Pour (0:30–1:30)
After the bloom, begin pouring slowly in concentric circles, working from the center outward and back in again. Pour steadily until you reach 150g total. Then continue adding water in stages until you reach 300g by 1:30 on your timer.

5. Drawdown and Finish (1:30–3:00)
Allow the water to pass through the coffee bed completely — this should take about 3 minutes total from your first pour. The bed should look flat and even when finished.
Discard the filter, swirl your cup gently to mix, and enjoy the aroma of your freshly brewed coffee.
If you’re more of a visual learner, this short video walks you through the pour over process from start to finish. It’s a simplified version of the full V60 method above — perfect for quick reference when you’re brewing at home.
This step-by-step video highlights the same key moments we covered:
Use this as your go-to visual reminder when brewing, and you’ll have café-level results every time — no guesswork required.
Even small adjustments can make a big difference in your cup. If your brew isn’t tasting quite right, here’s how to fine-tune it.
Grind Adjustments
Since grind size affects how quickly water flows through the coffee bed, even minor tweaks (1–2 clicks on a burr grinder) can completely rebalance your cup. If you are in need of an amazing grinder try Fellow Products Opus Conical Burr Grinder
Pouring Technique
Watch for dark patches on the surface of the coffee bed as you pour — these are dry spots that need more attention. Aim your pour to evenly saturate those areas for a smoother, more balanced flavor.
A steady, controlled pour is key. Think of it as painting in circles with water: gentle, precise, and even.
Bonus Tip
If your drawdown finishes too quickly (under 2:30), the grind may be too coarse. If it takes longer than 3:00, you may be grinding too fine or pouring too slowly.
